Mary has been living, working and travelling in Africa for most of the past decade, and has an insider's knowledge of the continent. She is an expert on travel and on general cultural and background information for countries south of the Sahara, especially Tanzania and Mozambique.
Her particular regions of expertise are east and south-eastern Africa - specifically Tanzania and Mozambique, where she has lived and worked for a cumulative total of almost six years. She speaks Swahili and Portuguese (in addition to several other languages), and is the sole author of guidebooks on both of these destinations.
Mary is also highly knowledgeable about other areas of the continent, including Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea and Cameroon. She lived for two years in West Africa, has written chapters on numerous West African countries, and is the author of a book on first time travel to the continent.
Mary can be commissioned for work on any of the following types of assignments:
* feature writing * preparation of background and briefing materials * research, and preparation of accompanying features or other texts * provision of any type of copy for print or digital publishers, including for web sites.
In addition, Mary offers the following services for individual and corporate clients:
* personalised advice on all aspects of travel in sub-Saharan Africa - from backpacking to luxury lodge safaris - with an emphasis on independent travel * assistance with holiday planning and with design of travel itineraries for all budgets * country-specific cultural and background briefings prior to commencement of your Africa travels or work.
Mary was born and raised in Washington, DC. After completing graduate studies at Georgetown University, she worked for several years in Europe, including an internship in the German Parliament. Her fascination with languages and cultures soon led her further south to Africa, where she worked for several years on development projects in Mozambique. Elsewhere on the continent, she has worked in Liberia and Sierra Leone as a freelance writer, and in Tanzania writing and researching. Mary now works as a full-time freelance and travel writer and has authored numerous Africa titles. In her free time, Mary studies languages, and speaks German, Portuguese and Swahili, and muddles by in French. Outside of Africa, she has travelled extensively in Europe, Asia and the Indian sub-continent.
